Which notebook is best for bullet journaling?

When you are getting started with bullet journaling, it is important to find a notebook that suits your needs. There are many types and sizes, and it can be difficult to choose, especially if you are a beginner. In this guide, we go through the most popular formats and help you choose the best notebook for your bullet journal.

Dot grid, lined, squared or blank?

Most Bullet Journal users prefer a Dot grid notebook, so a notebook with dots. The dots are subtle, but still provide support when you're drawing boxes, making layouts or writing. It's a great compromise between freedom and structure.

Other options:

  • Lined paper best suited for you, if you primarily want to write.

  • Squared paper is useful if you want to make a lot of tables and lists.

  • Blank paper is perfect for you who love to draw and want complete freedom.

If you are in doubt, we recommend starting with a dot grid – it is the most versatile solution.

A5, B5 or A6 – which size should you choose?

A5 is the most popular size. It is easy to carry in your bag and has enough space for both text and layout. If you want more writing space and a better overview, you can choose B5, which is a bit larger, but still easy to handle.

Advantages of A5:

  • Compact and easy to take with you

  • Let to find accessories in the same size

Benefits of B5:

  • More space for text and design

  • Better if you write a lot or make large layouts

A6 is also an option, especially if you want a compact notebook for quick notes or as a supplement to a larger journal.

Benefits of the A6:

  • Very easy to take on the go

  • Perfect for small tasks, ideas or as a logbook

Which paper is best?

The paper quality is important, especially if you use markers, brush pens or watercolour. Look for paper of 100 g/m² or higher to avoid bleed-through. At Plan & Plot Studio you will only find notebooks with paper we would use ourselves.

Which brands are popular?

At Plan & Plot Studio, we stock carefully selected brands that we love using ourselves:

  • Yop & Tommodern, stylish books with thick paper and a focus on the details.

  • Dingbatssustainable and beautifully crafted notebooks with high-quality paper.

  • Scribble & Dotstylish notebooks with heavy-duty paper and a focus on functionality.

We have carefully selected the brands we love to use ourselves.

Should the notebook have a hard or soft cover?

A hard cover offers better protection and makes it easier to write without a desk. A soft cover takes up less space and can be more flexible. It is a matter of personal preference and depends on whether you want to use your bullet journal at home, on the go, or both.

Choose what suits you

There is not one right solution, it is about your needs. Do you want to write a lot? Draw? Use it as a calendar, diary or creative outlet? Try things out, and remember: using your bullet journal should be a pleasure.
