Bullet Journal guide for beginners: Get started with Bullet Journaling

Hvad er en bullet journal?

A bullet journal is a flexible and personal method for organising your daily life, goals and thoughts. The system was developed by Ryder Carroll and is designed to be a combination of calendar, diary and notebook – all gathered in one journal. Bullet journaling is about structuring information in a simple way using bulleted lists, symbols and modules that can be adapted to your needs.

Why start a bullet journal?

  • Overview of everyday life – Keep track of appointments, tasks and goals.

  • More productivity – A bullet journal helps you to plan and prioritise.

  • Creative space – If you wish, you can make your journal personal with colours, stickers and doodles.

  • Room for reflection – A bullet journal can also be used as a diary or for gratitude notes.

How to get started – step by step

1. Choose your notebook and materials

To get started with bullet journaling, you will need:

  • A notebook – preferably with dot grid to make the layout easier.

  • A good pen – fineliners or gel pens are popular choices.

  • (Optional) Stickers, washi tape and colours for decoration.

2. Set up the basic modules

Bullet journaling consists of a few fixed elements that make the system easy to follow:

  • Index – A table of contents at the beginning, where you keep track of your tasks and pages.

  • Future Log – An overview of upcoming months and major events.

  • Monthly Log – A monthly overview of important dates and tasks.

  • Daily Log – Your daily notes, tasks and reflections.

  • Collections – Specialised pages for goals, reading lists, habit trackers or anything else.

3. Learn the basic Bullet Journal methods

  • Rapid Logging – One of the foundation stones of bullet journaling, where you use short notes and bullet points to summarise information quickly and efficiently. Instead of long sentences you write keywords, which makes it easier to get an overview and keep your journal clear and uncluttered.

  • Key – Bullet journaling uses a system of symbols to organise your notes. This is known as a key. For example, you can use:

    • ● for tasks

    • ○ for events

    • – for notes

    • ✦ for important tasks

    • ✘ for tasks that are no longer relevant

    • Rescheduled to another day

By using symbolic markers, you can quickly distinguish between different types of information and update your notes without rewriting them. Create a key that makes sense to you and your needs. It can be an advantage to note it on one of the first pages in your journal so that you can remember them.

  • Migration – A core principle in bullet journaling, where unfinished tasks are moved to a new day, week or month. If you don't get a task done, you mark it according to your key and moves it forward, which helps you assess whether it is still relevant. This ensures that your bullet journal remains a dynamic and up-to-date system.

Inspiration for the first pages of your bullet journal

If you are in doubt about how to start, you can try these pages:

  • A “What do I want to use my bullet journal for?” page.

  • A simple weekly planner.

  • A page with your long-term goals.

  • A van tracker.

  • A book or film list.

Make bullet journaling a habit

To get the most out of your bullet journal, it is important to use it regularly. Set aside time each week to plan and update your pages. Remember that a bullet journal is a flexible tool – it should suit you, not the other way around.
