Slow living with pen and paper

In a world where everything has to move fast and we are online all the time, sitting down with a notebook and a cup of tea can feel almost revolutionary. Writing by hand, drawing, colouring or decorating a page with no other purpose than calm and presence is the essence of slow living. And you do not need to move to the countryside or say no to everything in order to live a little more slowly.

What is slow living really?

Slow living is about taking the pace out of everyday life and being more present in what we do. It is a way of creating space for immersion, pauses and reflection. And it doesn't have to be big. It can begin with five minutes where you leave your phone alone and open your journal instead.

Why pen and paper?

When we write by hand, we activate the brain in a different way than when we write digitally. It slows down the pace, sharpens attention and gives us a feeling of creating something with the body. And it simply feels different to sit down with a notebook than with a screen.

That also applies when we colour. Filling in small motifs with felt-tip pens or coloured pencils brings calm to the body and freedom to the mind. There are no demands for it to be neat or perfect.

How you can use paper and pen as a slow living practice:

  • Write diary entries or reflections a couple of times a week

  • Create nice memory pages in your bullet journal

  • Use colouring books to relax in the evening

  • Make lists of things you are looking forward to or appreciate

  • Write letters or cards to someone you care about

Start small

Slow living isn't about changing your whole life all at once. It's about choosing something. A quiet moment. A few pages in a journal. A design you feel like colouring in. A cup of tea and a bit of time without notifications. Just you and the paper.

At Plan & Plot, you will find everything that can make your paper break a little cosier – from beautiful notebooks until stickers and colouring books, which exudes calm and presence.
